DC Student-Athlete Spotlight: Jordyn Henderson

DC Student-Athlete Spotlight: Jordyn Henderson

JMU scholarship student-athletes have the privilege to experience JMU through the lens of sport, while still pursuing your academic endeavors. And, as a student-athlete who has been awarded a scholarship, JMU donors have provided our Dukes the opportunity to enjoy their experience as a student-athlete. We want to celebrate our scholarship student-athletes and the donors who have supported them.

Enjoy a view into the scholarship student-athlete experience.

  • From first learning they were going to be receiving a scholarship...

  • To having the opportunity to pursue their academic experience as a student-athlete!

What is your dream job once you complete your studies at JMU?
My dream job post-graduation from JMU is to become a dermatologist.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in at JMU? And, what is your role in each of the organizations?
Captain of the Women's Track and Field

When did you find out that you would be receiving a student-athlete scholarship?
My senior year of high school (2021)!

What has it meant to you to be a recipient of a student-athlete scholarship?
It's very rewarding to be a recipient of a scholarship! Having the opportunity to get my education and continue to compete in the sport that I love at the collegiate level is truly a blessing.

If you had the opportunity to meet the donors who provided the funds to support your scholarship, what would you want to say to them?
Thank you for all of your selfless contributions and support towards my athletics as well as my education. The funds provided have allowed me to experience life lessons on and off the track that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Your support never goes unnoticed!

What has been your favorite part of being a JMU student-athlete?
Traveling with my teammates and having built-in best friends on campus.

What motivates you to give it your all in your sport and in the classroom?
Recognizing that God blessed me with the ability and opportunity to compete. There are lots of young adults around the world who would love to have the chance to compete and be apart of something as big as JMU. Thinking of that reminds me to remain humble and hardworking every day.

What do you love most about your team and JMU Athletics?
The bond that my teammates, coaches, and I share! I love how all of JMU athletics (athletes, coaches, support staff, etc.) sticks together!

Do you have a favorite moment from your experience as a student-athlete? If so, please share!
Winning Outdoor ECAC's my freshman year (2022). We made history as that was our first ECAC championship! Breaking the school record in the 60m hurdles for the first year in the Sun Belt Conference was very special to me as well!

Do you have any competition/game day traditions or superstitions?
Wearing my track spike charm necklace, listening to music, and praying before my race!

Who is your mentor and, what is the best advice you've received from your mentor?
My mentor is my current track coach: Coach Dee! She has always been supportive of me through the highs and the lows. Coach Dee recognizes that I'm a human before I'm a student-athlete. We both agree that we should utilize track and field to teach you lessons for later on in life. The best advice that she has ever given me is to trust my training and believe that God has already taken care of everything. There's no need to worry when you know who's writing your story.

What advice do you give to other JMU student-athletes to help encourage them during their journey at JMU?
Know that you're here for a reason. Regardless of what anyone else says, you're a vital part of your team! Enjoy each and every moment because the time flies!
