JMU Hosts 2023 Baseball Alumni Weekend

The Duke Club and the JMU baseball program hosted the 2023 Baseball Alumni Weekend March 31 through April 2 — featuring a golf outing, recognition of the 1983 team and a pre-game tailgate — to kickoff the JMU weekend series against South Alabama.

Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament

Alumni weekend action got under way with the Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament at Spotswood Country Club — an opportunity for alumni to kick back, connect and compete with teammates, fellow alumni, coaches and staff.

The tournament winning team, with a score of 58, included Derek Shifflett ’15, Steve Floyd, Tim Floyd and Jimmy Aikens.

1983 Team Recognition

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the JMU 1983 championship team's historic run in the College World Series, JMU baseball recognized 1983 alumni on the field prior to the first pitch on Friday, March 31.

In 1983, with Coach Brad Babcock at the helm, this amazing group of men went 37 and 13 in their historical season — earning an at-large bid to the Eastern Regional and achieving a perfect 4-0 record to advance to our program’s first College World Series.

Returning 1983 team players included Rich Bralley '86, Steve Cullers ‘84, Tommy Estepp ‘85, Randy Foster, Phil Fritz ‘84, Justin Gannon ‘85, Chris Garber ‘86, Andrew Heintzleman ‘85, Jeff Kidd ‘82/‘84M, Bob Lamon ‘85, Dave Pleasants ‘85, Mike Reeves ‘85, Robert Trumbo ‘86, Jeff Urban ‘85, Kip Yancey ‘83 and Mike Downey.

In addition to celebrating Alumni Weekend, baseball alumni, parents and friends of the program also celebrated achieving the fundraising goal of $50,000 for the Babcock Legacy Endowment.

In recognition of the legacy of Coach Brad Babcock — who built JMU Baseball into one of the preeminent programs in the region and touched the lives of many over his 32 years of service at JMU — the endowment was established to provide support for the JMU Baseball program in perpetuity. Though the initial endowment fundraising goal has been achieved, it's just the beginning! The team's next goal is $100,000, and they need your support to continue to impact the JMU Baseball student-athlete experience.
